It is also central for the places our regulars actually come from. Southbank and the casino end of town are under ten minutes away. Port Melbourne, Albert Park, South Yarra and Docklands are all a short drive. If you are on public transport, the Clarendon St trams put you a few minutes’ walk away, and a cab from Flinders St is a short fare.

What we mean by a premium Asian venue

Plenty of places use the word premium. Here it comes down to five things you can check for yourself:

• The photos are of the woman who meets you. If the roster says she is in, she is in.
• The roster changes every day, so we point you at the Today’s Girls page instead of naming anyone on a blog post that might be six months old.
• Reception is staffed by people who do this for a living and answer questions without a sales pitch. Chinese-speaking reception is available during all opening hours.
• Rooms have their own bathroom, and they are cleaned and reset between every booking.
• The venue is licensed and operates under Victorian regulations, which is not something every listing site you will find can say.

A first visit, start to finish

Most of the nerves people arrive with are about not knowing the shape of the thing. It is short:

1. Park at the door or on Tope St, and go in through the front door. The door is not open to the street.
2. Reception takes you through to a private lounge. You will not be left sitting where other guests walk past.
3. You are told who is available right then, with photos, and given a minute to decide. Nobody pushes.

It is the car park being at the door rather than around the block, the entrance not facing a main road, reception being out of public view, and nobody asking for a name or a phone number you do not want to give.
